What is the best wood to make an outdoor sign? – Woodworking Business Card Ideas

It varies. The wood will play a major role in making an outdoor sign whether you decide to use a wooden sign frame or not. But for the sake of this article I decided to use a simple, inexpensive board sign that I made using a large board sign frame. It works just as well with a small wood frame I used for a couple other outdoor signs. Here’s a close-up of the sign I used:

I purchased a $5 piece of lumber to build the sign out of. It’s also pretty cheap so I’m inclined to use it and it should last for a while, I promise. And don’t worry, I bought the exact same piece of lumber from Home Depot. (Well, technically not exactly the same, but close enough for this article.)

Here’s what you’ll need:

2 x 4×4 boards that are 3-1/2″ x 6″ (the board frame is 2″). For me that was about $5 but I used different pieces depending on the size of the board I was making a sign on. I cut 3″ x 6″ boards that were 1″ x 2″.

2 x #6 or 1/2″ screws (optional)

1 x #20 drill bit

1 x 1-1/2″ x 8-7/8″ washtub nailer (optional)

1 x 3″ wide wood glue stick (optional)

Tools you’ll need:

2 x #6 or 1/2″ screws

a drill bit for drilling through each 2×4 board (optional)

nailer: You don’t need one of these (you can use standard wood glue or epoxy nailer)

If you have multiple doors, these are the parts you’re going to want:

2 x 4×4 boards that are 6″ x 10″ (the board frame is 2″ x 6″). (The #6 or 1/2″ screw is optional)

2 x #6 or 1/2″ screws

1 x #20 or 1/2″ drill bit

1 x 1-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ washtub nailer (optional)

2 x 3″ wide wood glue sticks

Nailer: I used an exacto knife to make the board frame. I like that type of nailer, but I also like the more flexible wooden ones that are
