It’s easy for most people to believe that cancers are a direct result of eating unhealthy foods, but in reality cancer is caused by a cocktail of factors.
In a new study from researchers at Harvard Health’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, cancer in men and women who regularly ate whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish also has a strong link to body weight.
While the study has a relatively small sample size, the researchers found similar results among the study’s 866 participants.
Participants reported eating about the same amount of calories as when they started. But as the participants gained weight, their risk of developing cancer doubled. Researchers used a method called “overweight-for-health” weight loss to calculate risks for nearly 7,000 men and women with the same eating habits.
The risk increased with the amount of physical activity the participants did and the number of cigarettes they smoked. The results are published online June 8 in JAMA Internal Medicine.
“We did not study people who were very overweight,” said William Hsu, professor of medicine at the Harvard Kennedy School and director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. “The study is not meant to be a cure-all for eating disorders, but it is a message about the dangers of unhealthy eating.”
