Digital graphics: After I finished designing the character, I realized how much better that would be if it was printed out onto the computer. I started playing Paint Shop Pro, the program that’s still used at Pixar for producing animated movies.
Drawing with a stylus, to do a quick sketch: Just because a digital drawing doesn’t automatically translate into a physical drawing doesn’t mean you can’t draw with a pen and paper. Some of the easiest sketching tasks you can do with a stylus are to draw curves and line paths, and draw circles on the computer screen. You’re not going to get the exact same drawing quality that you would with an actual pencil and paper.
I would say pencil drawing is the most accessible way to do these tasks, since most artists are accustomed to playing with digital art tools. But drawing with a pencil isn’t all that fun. In fact, it just makes your head hurt a little bit.
You can even buy an inkjet printer which creates an identical color and scale of the computer screen to that of the pencil and paper, which makes drawing faster and easier on the eyes.
But what about those paper drawings that I always draw from my computer screen like the first illustration from Frozen? Well, the paper draws on the computer screens and on your drawing paper. You just do what I said, and do a quick sketch. It just doesn’t translate to using a pencil and paper.
Digital drawing is fine for what I just discussed. But how about when you’re drawing scenes from animation, because you’re not drawing from paper but are drawing on something that a computer screen can create?
You don’t need a computer to do that sort of drawing, because drawing on the screen can be done in a number of ways. For example, if you need to draw a whole frame of animation, you could use a software program like Adobe Photoshop. But again, you’re not going to be able to get the exact same look from doing that as compared to drawing on a physical screen.
That’s why it’s really important to get comfortable with drawing on actual paper, because you don’t really need to worry about what looks good on screen versus what looks good in your computer.
There’s one thing, though, when you’re drawing on actual paper, that you’ll find the process is completely different and much more fun. So just for the record, it’s not a digital drawing.
