An 18-year-old who reportedly lost nearly half his legs after being attacked by a dog in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania was diagnosed with schizophrenia after arriving in the United States as an unaccompanied minor.

The Associated Press quoted an unnamed family member as telling the news website that Abdulkhaleq Abdurahman, of Pennsylvania, first came to the U.S. as an unaccompanied minor in 2012 and has since sought treatment for his mental health.

After coming to the U.S., however, Abdulkhaleq began exhibiting mental problems; the AP also notes that he may have been bullied by some of the staff at his asylum-seekers’ shelter because his mother was undocumented.

He was reportedly forced to live his life among other unaccompanied minors in the shelter.

It is possible that Abdulkhaleq, who had just turned 18, was attempting to flee persecution when, despite his apparent mental health problems, he boarded his plane in Philadelphia.

The warming trend is expected to continue for decades. According to the new findings, scientists at the United Nations have already estimated that the oceans will warm by about 2 degrees Celsius (4.6 degrees
