It’s hard to say, but there are photographers who can. The problem is that you don’t want to work for a newspaper newspaper, but you do want to get paid. So you need to try and get a bit of exposure, which is usually through advertising. There is also a whole niche where photographers can start their own newspaper, so you can write all the ads and then have pictures of celebrities on the front page. But then you have to start thinking about what the business model is for the magazine or website that you work for. And if you need a lot of experience in the business world, then that is another route.
What about advertising itself?
It sounds strange to say this, but advertising is a lot like photography. Advertising is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. It’s just not as easy to get your foot in the door as when you started out. The biggest difficulty you will encounter is getting it as far as print. But if you don’t need to advertise, then going the traditional route is not always an option. You can write for a magazine, or be a photo writer. Photography is very similar to the writing you do when you get into journalism.
Can they afford to employ a freelance photographer?
They cannot afford to pay you, and there are very few agencies that can pay you more than one to one. It is all about the client: if the client wants to pay for work rather than hire you, he or she is on the right track. Then there is a good chance you will be able to get some work from people who don’t want a lot of photographers.
