What is your greatest achievement? A simple answer of ‘I love your songs’ to any question will certainly help us to identify you. But what is a true self-portrait?
Many artists use ‘portraiture’ to reveal a more personal image, a picture with more than the typical self-portrait.
The term ‘portrait photography’ was coined by the American photographer John Baldessari in the 1920’s, and is a term coined and used by many artists from a variety of disciplines.
A Portrait is a Portrait
A portrait is a self portrait with the subject or someone in the frame.
A portrait is a very specific kind of self portrait, usually a picture taken during a formal presentation at a gallery.
A portrait is usually a portrait of the artist, but if there is a background, it could be anything. It could be some other person, a window, something that is standing next to you, or the person you are about to talk to.
This might explain why some of the best portraits are taken of a woman who is alone without her husband. If she is standing close to the camera, she can look herself on camera, without a partner or someone else looking in on her. This helps the viewer to feel as if she is looking deep in her own soul, and is at peace that she has found someone who has the same beauty as she herself. By this method, the photograph feels intimate.
The photographer takes the photograph while the subject is standing away from the camera, but at a distance she can see the person looking in.
