If we want to increase the frequency response of our violin, we can build a “mini-port” for our violin, which will increase the output range, and that produces an output that can be much closer to the output of the original instrument. In order for this to work, you’ll have to have a new violin that is quite loud (say, 200 W or 1 W is quite loud). If you use a mini-port (which I like), then that’s OK—but that’s not a violin we’d want to have in our family room, or the car.
Here are a couple other notes about the size of instruments:
A piano can be anywhere from 8 ft by 4 ft to 36 ft by 12 ft. This is probably the most important factor when sizing and tuning a player’s instrument, because it dictates the size of the base instrument as well. If the instrument is not big enough to fit in the trunk of a car (maybe 2 ft by 2 feet, for instance), then we can’t use the larger scale, for no reason. We’ll have to go smaller. If the violin is 4 ft by 2 feet, then we go for the 8 ft by 4-foot model because the size is more like a violin. You’ll often have to look down in the range to find the ideal violin for you. A 2 ft (or 6 m) model might be more comfortable, but it’s a big deal.
