No, it isn’t! As someone who learned to play music because of a mother who wanted to, this would have been quite hard for me. But now I have my own violin, and to this day, I find it a lot easier to learn than many others, although I have my own weaknesses that could easily prevent me from progressing at the level I am able to.
Can you teach me how to play jazz?
It’s not too difficult, as long as you have a good ear. You just need to concentrate. It can still be difficult, but it actually can be pretty enjoyable if you put your mind to it. The jazz I learned from my mother is a bit too fast for the beginner, so I only play in the second position, although I can play on any of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th positions as well. If your fingers are not used to playing on the violin, it may seem a bit awkward at first, but once you have learned the key, it gets easier a lot.
What else is there to do in a jazz venue?
There are so many things to do, from talking to the staff to playing some of the more unusual instruments. One of my favourites is to sit in on a gig, and I’ve made arrangements to make such occasions a regular thing. You can go in and enjoy your favourite tunes or see the staff playing different kinds of music. And all the jazz musicians who come to the venue all enjoy themselves too. There’s no better way to have a good show!

How hard is practicing solo jazz and doing gigs?
It’s very hard, especially in the beginning, and I don’t recommend it for some! It really depends how many hours you put in each day, and you can usually still play well if you put it into practice and practice hard. Once you get better, you should do more concerts to get the experience of the concert hall, but I don’t recommend that if you are not used to it.
