I can choose from 3 styles:
Instrumental: “A good first step to learn piano, and a nice little instrument to learn on.”
“A good first step to learn piano, and a nice little instrument to learn on.” Vocational: “A good first step to learn guitar, or violin, or whatever. Not much to teach you yet.”
So, let’s say you decide to spend $200 on instruments for yourself (and don’t get too serious because of this). You should learn from these examples.
How much money should you pay to learn?
The answer is, not too much. There’s so much that’s going to be left to learn. And you can probably guess that you can take at least 1 year away from the piano, a year off the guitar, and 2-3 years from the violin before you start to get seriously in demand with clients.
Now, what do you learn? Here are a couple of key things:
You learn what your current skills and abilities are, and how you need to develop into a better musician. You learn the technical foundations of playing the piano. You learn what kind of a sound you want to create. You learn the difference between rhythm and melodic intonation. You build the musical vocabulary so that you can better express yourself. You develop the emotional connections to the music, and how you want to be received. You develop the understanding of why you have particular interests. If everything sounds interesting and you can’t articulate all the reasons that are in your head, then it’s important to take steps to make yourself more aware of why that is. Finally, you learn how to think, how to express yourself. You learn how to articulate and present yourself more effectively and effectively communicate to others who do not understand.
Do I know all this? Nope. But then again, I certainly don’t know about you, and I certainly don’t know enough about your experiences to suggest that you know better than me that you should just do your own research.
Here are some things you may also want to know before we get into things that I’d just recommend you try:
