When people hear the word “stigma” or “psychopath,” they think of someone on a list of the world’s most dangerous, insane, violent, and unpredictable human beings. But when you ask people what we think of when we hear the word “psychopath” or “sociopath,” what do the responses usually contain?

I know, not pretty. And you’ll be shocked to know I used to fit the description as well. I was a shy, socially introverted little girl whose life I would try to preserve, even then. After high school, my father was a Vietnam veteran who worked in government and would always take care of me. He gave me an allowance, food, and his support as I went away to college (he took all the credit cards but refused credit). I did not have a lot of friends because my parents told me that it was too complicated to be with people outside of a certain age groups, but I was fortunate that I was able to fit into a number of different lifestyles with varying degrees of success.

Eventually, we moved away from my town-based suburban life, so I had to take the step into life without him. But it was a life with no one. I had to start over. It was going to be really hard, but I was going to try everything I could to make it work. My parents put their faith in me when I was 19 years old, not much older than I was at the time.

One of the first things everyone said when I got homeschooled was, “Well what do you have to be special about to get into the schools you want to attend?” I think they meant they were concerned people like me, but that’s simply not the case. In addition to being homeschooled, I attended a local public school. Despite trying very hard to fit in, I was not able to. The local school district is really strict and if
