This is only happening in one location in this country: the U.S. military’s Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
That’s because at the time — as I reported at the time — Fort Bragg’s commander, General John M. “Joe” Prugioni, had a change of heart on gun control. He didn’t go after weapons, he said, he went after “evil” terrorists to make them pay.
The reason for the shift in policy: the 9/11 attacks.
When Prugioni announced plans to arm the military with guns — the kind of weapons that were used to kill the men who carried out the 9/11 attacks — he said, “I believe if we can’t fight a war with a gun, we might as well fight it with a bucket.”
And, apparently, with a bucket is the sweetest thing to say to people who are scared by terror attacks.
But that attitude has led to just the kind of gun violence that the military wants to control. During the Fort Bragg lockdown, a man who lived in a neighboring town reportedly shot his wife, killing her. Two men in the area, according to local news sites, also fired guns on their own.
“When an entire city is in lockdown as a result of a lone gunman attack, it just sends a clear message to law-abiding citizens that the military is not there to protect them,” Rep. Ted Poe, a Republican senator from Texas, said. Poe’s office issued no explanation for his response.
When I mentioned to the Fort Bragg commander that this was happening in his own town, he told me I’d be disappointed.
