(KUTV) An international group of scientists says they have found new evidence that the Big Island of Hawaii may have been the scene of a major extinction event 150,000 years ago. The researchers report this week that a fossil known as Steller’s eagle represents the oldest evidence of a newly identified group of animals known as the Steller’s sea-dog-like creatures.
The fossils were unearthed in 2004 in what is now the Big Island of Hawaii. Since then, scientists and scientists at the University of Hawaii Museum of Natural History have been working to identify the new species and find out exactly what this remarkable fossil meant. But until now, scientists weren’t sure if the Steller’s eagle should even be considered a new species.
Now, they say it does appear the little sea-dog-like creatures existed on this new island at the time it was formed, 150,000 years ago, during the Miocene epoch that ended 66 million years ago.
