In the past three weeks, I’ve spoken with about five separate students about their personal experiences with a “special relationship” with a friend or loved one and, even worse, what that relationship might have meant.
This kind of interaction is really one thing I’d never thought about when talking to college students – it might well be as common as hanging out with a group of people you’ve known for ages.
A few months ago I was at a summer job interview. The interviewer asked me a series of yes or no questions that I had to answer truthfully. “Does your mom drive a Honda Civic?” “Does your dad drive a Porsche?” Yes or No questions – a fairly straightforward question – don’t demand a yes or no answer. They just ask you questions. The interviewer is just interested in getting an idea of how you’d deal with specific scenarios in life. But if the questions had no good answers and no bad answers, that seemed like an obvious thing I could do but that I didn’t want to.
But the very next question was something that sounded so bad – “Does your boyfriend drive a Lamborghini and has you been getting a lot of mail at weekends?” “What do you like to do on your break?” The questions were really hard.
