There’s no such thing as a “learning” in that, but you still need a year to learn something. In fact, if you don’t learn something that you’ll enjoy over the next year, you shouldn’t stay, since you need to learn something new in order to create something you’ll enjoy. And if you’re learning for money, there’s absolutely no room for error.
If you’re learning to become a dancer, you have to start with “basic” movement. As you gain strength, you can build up into more advanced work and try variations. But when that’s all you’ve ever been taught, you’re ready to move on.
So when would you feel comfortable spending an entire year learning to play a piano?
You’re learning your instrument, and you’re only learning a subset of the piano’s sounds, which means that if you want to be a good pianist, you have to try at least a dozen different ways and lots of different ways to play that piano. Even if you’re one of the smartest humans there are around, you can’t just go on practicing and hope for the best for this piano. You can’t just make piano music or try to learn how to play it. Every day, you have to try and create some different style of music that involves your fingers and your ears and your hands, and that’s something a year alone won’t do.
If you take lessons for your dream job (or even if you don’t), you won’t be able to go back to being a student until you’re very comfortable. If you learn piano as a hobby after you graduate, you might as well never make it to your dream job.
What about going on trips abroad with the hope of learning things?
Don’t.
When will you graduate?
My best guess is about two years after I graduate from school, then I’ve started a company called Tilt and we’re hoping to hit a few early numbers. That’s still too far away to decide exactly how I’ll work. But the more you’ve been learning, the better job I think your options will be if you want to move to the other side of the world to do things you hate. But it’s also too late to move abroad right now, so no.
