Ethics photography is defined as photography which deals with issues of ethical behaviour.
I use ethical photography when I am documenting people using my photography as a medium.
What do we mean by ethical photography?
Ethical photography is, in essence, taking an ethical stance.
In this regard, the photographer considers the ethical status of the people, place or situation for which the photograph is being taken.
For instance, a person walking a dog who is trying not to hurt the dog is photographing that person as an individual instead of a dog.
A person who is looking at a sunset and looking at a mountain and is trying to figure out what should be done about it as part of his role as a citizen is photographing the mountains as an individual rather than the sunset as a whole.
Ethical photography involves having a point of view rather than simply documenting what is happening.
What types of ethical issues require ethical photography?
To answer this, we will need to go back and look at the definition of ethics of a human being.
Human beings live in a world in which there are many ethical issues.
For example, it is ethically inappropriate for a human to:
be rude
abuse their position or power
sell products or services that are unethical
be physically violent towards others
neglect their children
be violent towards others
break their relationships with others by committing crimes or being disrespectful.
How do ethical photographers deal with ethical issues?
Ethical photographers will try to approach them ethically while also ensuring their actions are legal and in compliance with the relevant laws.
One thing to note is that the best ethical photographers also avoid working within organisations that allow the abuse of power, for example in the public sector.
This is because there is a real danger that you could expose yourself to criminal and civil liability.
For instance, if a camera store were to become aware of a person’s ethical problem, they could sue the ethical photographer and demand the money that the ethical photographer spent on the shoot.
The more ethical the photographer is, the less likely the photography company will become concerned about them.
However, if you feel that your ethical issue is one you cannot avoid or deal with without consequences then you should contact your local ethical photography organisation.
