BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore’s homicide count soared past 200 for the eighth straight year in 2016.

The homicide tally has nearly topped 2,000 for the first time since 2007.

The city recorded more than 1,900 homicides last year, a 5.8 percent increase from 2015.

The 2015 annual average was 1,874.

The increase has been helped thanks to the city’s massive population growth over the past five years. Baltimore has more than tripled in size. It is the second largest city in the U.S. with 5.7 million residents.

“When you look at the sheer size of Baltimore, you’re kind of like, ‘well we really need to get a handle on this.’ It is very dramatic,” said Baltimore Commissioner Kevin Davis.

The increase has been made possible by a rising murder rate, as more Baltimoreans are dying at the hands of someone other than law enforcement.

It is the highest number recorded per 100,000 people in the city since 1998.

Baltimore Police say the increase may be attributed to a number of factors, including drug trafficking and organized crime. But they also say the trend appears to be changing.

“A number of officers tell us this is a time to pay more attention,” said Commissioner Davis.

Many Baltimore residents will not like to think about the number of homicides in their community because their neighborhood has not been plagued by crime for too long. But these numbers are sobering nonetheless.

“I think there are a lot of other factors in terms of what we’re talking about here, like the heroin epidemic, and so many people being incarcerated, that I don’t think any people can sit here and pretend their neighborhood has been safe,” said John McManus, Director of Youth Development for the Baltimore City Public School System.

The Baltimore Public Schools are dedicated to making sure every student has access to a quality education, regardless of their family income. This includes providing financial aid, affordable housing and job training.

Baltimore city residents said the increase in homicides is a reminder of why they need to be proactive in their neighborhood and stay vigilant. There’s certainly no shortage of things you can do to keep yourself and your loved
