Read this: http://www.laweekly.com/featured/download-photoshop-for-free-5-steps-i-took-to-legalize-it/ and I’ll link here. Downloading the photo was completely legal. Even if there’s already a plugin that does this (which there isn’t) it does not mean you’re breaking any laws. But most importantly, I do it because I want to add to my library of photos – and I do so knowing that others will look at it and decide I’ve done something illegal (I don’t). So please, when you see my work, consider this – just because someone else did it (like myself) does not mean it’s illegal. I’d definitely recommend you stop.
So. Back to the real question. Is it legal? Well, let’s discuss that one one. It isn’t, but if you want to upload it to the internet, then it’s legal. Yes, I’m talking about uploading to websites that are in the Public Domain. Some may be – some aren’t. The most famous one is Flickr. While you can’t upload photos to Flickr (or anything, really) you can upload them to the web under Creative Commons CC-BY. And that includes making them available on your own website/blog. There are plenty of free websites that provide free images, including these:
If you haven’t already done so, you might also have noticed that Flickr has an API that allows you to access the images on their site. Yes, you can use the API in some cases. This can be a great way to use the images in blog posts. And in some cases, it can be helpful (e.g. if you’d rather post on Instagram than Facebook).
The problem though, is that the image itself is not “free”. However, you do have to pay the artist. Usually you’ll have to pay the artist a nominal amount for licensing. This may seem ridiculous at first, because this means you are making your own work “free”. But it has to be done. When I upload my photos to Flickr, I need to pay the artist for the copyrights to the photos. This is part of what makes my photos “free”. I just need to pay the artist for the images.
That being said, I don’t know about all the photo bloggers out there. When I go to Flickr and look at the photos, I can’t help but
