Yes, it is. But learn something new every now and again. Don’t learn about 30 chords in one day to feel like you are making progress. Learn something new every now and again. Learn something new every now and again. Do your practice sessions at home if you can. You don’t need to be an expert to get good at playing music.
The most important lesson I had to learn is how to be a professional. Being a professional in any field is a lot of hard work and commitment. You have to pay your dues. You have to put in some time, go to work, and sacrifice a lot of time to become a professional. It’s the same way being a musician in other professions. You’re not just a musician anymore. You’re a human being in the world. Being a professional means you have to spend lots of time and be a little bit dedicated to your craft.
For me, that was hard at the beginning. I didn’t know what else to do outside of playing. I was doing some pretty boring things in school for the first few years. I just didn’t know what to do.
When I quit being a student at MIT, I didn’t want to be a regular student. I was really passionate about learning how to make music. As soon as you have that dream you don’t want to live up to it. There are all these other demands you have to fulfill in your life, and as a musician I could be spending four hours playing the violin by 5:45 PM every day. I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to play for people, and that’s how I started making music. There must be other ways to keep yourself motivated.
I started making music as a way to try and keep myself entertained, and I ended up making music that was interesting enough that people would find it entertaining, which I think is a beautiful quality. I can’t say whether it’s a good thing that I made music for entertainment, but at the same time it’s a great thing to make music for yourself so you can make art.
You might not be a professional if you just play music because you want to make music. Some people make art simply out of playing music. But it could be any skill you learn and then apply it outside of music. You never know what your dream might be in 10 years.
