We like to think that there is no such thing as a beginner. You don’t have to be a teacher to play guitar. You just have to be willing to have fun (sometimes being a bit too excited). The key is that you take a deep breath and allow yourself to explore different chords, but never try and play them the same way over and over again. That would be silly! In order to achieve the perfect harmony and feel of a chord, try to play something very similar to what it sounds like, but in a completely different key. After trying this with a few guitarists, we are pretty confident that you’ll soon understand what the ‘sounds’ mean. After that, you simply repeat the process and move onto the next chord. That’s it!
Can’t I just learn chords on the guitar or on a tape library?
Some people can and some will. As an aside, we are a band with a ton of different instruments and we try to get the best sounds possible from each by mixing them to create the most appropriate sound for each part. The best way to find out which keys you most relate to is to check out our lesson on keys.
How do I know what chords are playing in a song?
We are trying to figure this out for our own enjoyment. Some people have a sense of what chords are playing in a song, others do not have one. Either way you’ll get a different sound than what your teacher would usually give you. In the early stages, one really important thing to do is to listen to the words and lyrics while watching the live show when the solo starts. Watch how the chords are written and hear how the lyrics are sung.
What about the drums in the band?
The drums and bass will play almost every part in the band.
Can I get involved with the band if I wasn’t already doing it?
That is a great question! If you haven’t already, check out our band page with pictures and all kinds of information. If you would like to get involved, please email us with all the details, and we can get you in contact with our bassist(s).
What would you advise my friends to do to become musicians?
For our band, we have decided to go the route of what our teachers call ‘active musicianship’. This will involve some form of musical training, a lot of practice, and some exposure to rock music. We do that with
