In a way, it should be – but I’ve always been more of an introvert than a musician. That makes it a real challenge, and it’s probably a great example that if you’re willing to get the hang of it, you can learn anything. I definitely recommend doing it for as long as you can, but you’ll also learn a lot about yourself and the way you feel about yourself as you go along.
So far, I’ve got a good idea what my musical background is, and I still want to have a degree in music, despite the odds (that might be because I’m going to school full time, or it might be because it’s impossible to make money in music, or both). The bottom line is this: if you’re a music major and you’re getting a degree in music, then good. If you want to learn something else and learn some technique, great. I would certainly try my best to get a degree in something else, but I don’t know that I should rush into it. This is just the way it works, I guess.
So what’s in it for me as an apprentice?
Honestly, all I can say is that it’s a lot better than a regular job, so you’ll be able to do a lot more and you’ll make a lot more money, and it will be much more fun. I think a lot of people go into music to get something out of it, and a career in guitar has that as one of its major features, but the thing is, that doesn’t mean a ton of people do it that way. People just can’t be bothered with studying more than a week a year for music, for example. It’s very possible for one person to make hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year playing guitar, when there’s people who actually study everything they can.
Are there any other hobbies I should consider taking up?
Yes, of course, you should. You should definitely go swimming and take yoga and do other stuff for fun – but you’re better off doing that instead of studying guitar. I’m sure you will get a degree in music, so go learn some new songs, make an album, or just be creative! That’s what music is for – to get started, or stop. If you want to do something on the side or get some extra cash, that would be fine too.
