John Roberts is a senior advisor to President Donald Trump who served as chief counsel to the President during the time a special counsel was appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election.
John, first met Trump prior to the start of his campaign and subsequently became the president’s campaign CEO. On August 15, 2016, John worked with Trump to draft a statement that the FBI Director James Comey had released on July 5, 2016. After the FBI Director announced that the director was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails, John was asked to help draft Trump’s own statement. He drafted the prepared statement that the President released, and it was subsequently shared among his colleagues in the White House that evening. John is a graduate of Cornell University (Yale Law School). During his law school time away and working as an attorney, John clerked under Judge Royce C. Lamberth at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Southern District of New York. After graduating cum laude from Stanford Law School, John clerked for Judge Dolly Gee.
After graduating from Harvard Law School, John left federal government and joined the law firm of Fisher & Phillips in Washington, D.C. He was later named an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the Office of the Attorney General, where he prosecuted organized crime and terrorism cases, and served as its Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Public Affairs and Public and Private Litigation.
John has served on other advisory boards including the White House Council on Strategic Initiatives (2001-2006), the International Crisis Group (1991-2002), the National Security Council (1996-1997), the Department of Defense-Office of Military Cooperation and Engagement (1998-2000), and the Department of Transportation-Office of Civilian Oversight (2001-2002). While working at the Department of Defense, he served as Chief of Staff to Admiral Samuel Locklear, the director for Strategic Planning, and the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations in Joint Staff. At the Department of Transportation, John served as the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Resources in Policy, Plans and Programs.
