A half court shot, or half-court shot, is a shot from the 2-point line in which a player’s foot or fingers rest on the ground or a surface other than the baseline or free throw line. The player can shoot this way from just about anywhere.
What is a two-pointer?
A two-pointer is a 2-point shot from the right side of the basket, above the level of the basket, by a player. That player can also shoot this shot on other court designs.
The two-pointer is not the same as a half-court shot, which is a ball shot from the middle of the backboard. A game must be played using all of these two-point shots. The following are some examples:
Basketball game: In this example, a player takes the ball from the top of the backboard. He then sets a screen to the right and takes a straight line shot over the goal line from a two-pointer. The ball goes out of bounds. Play continues until the ball leaves the court, but no player scores. Basketball game: In this example, a player takes the ball from the end of the backboard on the left. He sets a screen to the right and takes a 2-point jump shot from a two-pointer. Then, while remaining in bounds, he releases the ball. Play continues until the ball leaves the court, but no player scores. Basketball game: In this example, a player shoots a mid-range jumper under the basket on the right side of the court. He sets a screen to the right. He takes an arc shot over or around the basket and then releases the ball. Play continues until the ball is released or the player has played out the shot clock, but no player scores.
These are just a handful of examples of half court shots. You will notice that many games do not have two-point shots. Sometimes, games have no two-point shots or only two-point shots. For these situations, the best place to shoot these half court shots is around the basket. Remember that only half courts are legal in the NBA.
Who starts?
A player will be eligible to play in any game that has not started. If a game has been called, the starting lineup has been made.
