Most of them, at least from our experiences, look like giant dicks with a huge black and white arrow above it.
The first two track types are called a “high-latitude” (or “high-elevation”) track and a “latitude-dense” (or “latitude-dense”) track. The high-latitude tracks appear to have a slightly bluish tinge and a slightly yellowish tinge. The latitudes-dense tracks have somewhat of a pale yellowish tint and a much redder tinge.
In the image below I’ll put them side-by-side:
The high-latitude track is basically an arrow pointing in an eastward direction and the latitudes-dense track is about a half-arc-long. In the image above I’ve marked the approximate locations of each type.
Here’s a comparison of a high-latitude and a latitudes-dense track from Hurricane Gloria (1987).
This is the only time I’ve seen two track types on two different hurricanes (since 1983 only.) I think this is pretty cool.
Finally, here’s a picture of three tracks over a time span of many years with a few outliers. (All the images are from NCEI.) What I’m trying to say is that I’m sure there are other types and I’d love to hear about them.
Thanks for reading, and make sure to send me some weather alerts!
