“We’ve done our homework. We want to see some horses that are a bit different from the usual suspects. One of my favorite moments for the Kentucky Derby was when the horse I thought was going to win didn’t win. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a horse that was going to win with a head injury. We don’t really go out and find horses that may not have good records. Instead, we have many months of preparation before the big day.”
The Kentucky Derby is a one-horse draw in America’s favorite race. This year, two horses out of a field that included 19 horses will be drawn, with two other horses being a part of the second half of the Derby field.
“There’s a lot of history behind the Kentucky Derby. There was an era with four times as many entries in the Kentucky Derby back in the day,” said Stoddard. “I think the Kentucky Derby will bring out that history. The Kentucky Derby is a race, not a race in the sense that there was a lot of horses that were there last year or a lot that were here to stay. There’s not a lot of difference between what’s coming to Kentucky and what comes to Texas.”
Stoddard knows the first few weeks leading up to the Derby will bring fans to their feet, and excitement should be high. And in his view, that is what makes this race so special.
“I’m very excited to be here. I love watching horses go. The anticipation is definitely there,” said Stoddard. “The Kentucky Derby is a big race and there’s so much history behind this race. In particular, the fact that people get to watch the horses that will be the ones in the second half of the Kentucky Derby field, those are great celebrations and I am thrilled to be part of it.”
The Kansas City Board of Alderman is accepting applications for a horse to compete in the Kentucky Derby. These horses will be drawn from three different categories based on a criteria like age, race, and performance. Those with the highest overall grades will compete for the right to compete in the first-ever Derby Draw for a winning horse. Applications are open until Monday, March 6 at 11:59 PM EST.
